A Small Pause Can Change Your Next Step

When a moment feels tense, it can be easy to react before you have had time to understand what is happening. A brief pause can create a little room between the moment and your response.

Try a simple reset

Place both feet on the floor if that feels comfortable. Notice the support beneath you, relax your shoulders, and take a few comfortable breaths without forcing them to be deep. Look around and name a few things you can see.

Ask what the moment needs

Consider whether the next step is to ask a question, set a boundary, get more information, take a break, or return to the conversation later. You do not need to solve everything at once.

Keep it realistic

A pause will not remove every source of stress, and some situations need practical help or support from other people. It can simply help you approach the next decision with a little more intention.

These suggestions are general educational tools. Adapt them to your needs and circumstances.
